Land Remediation Relief was introduced by the Government to encourage businesses to bring contaminated and derelict land back into use. It can be used by businesses that are registered as a Company and who are buying already contaminated land – it does not apply if you are responsible for the contamination.

Both ground contamination and buildings or structures that are considered to be contaminated are covered, including buildings with asbestos and sites with Japanese knotweed.

The amount of relief you can claim depends on the nature of ownership and the type of the contamination, but potentially, you could receive 150% of the cost of remediation as tax relief or receive a payable tax credit. Importantly, LRR can also be claimed by developers as an enhanced cost of sale – the relief is not limited to just investors.
